John Gyngell is a highly respected figure in the UK beer and hospitality industry, with almost three decades of experience helping shape the country’s modern craft beer culture.

He founded North Bar in Leeds in 1997, widely regarded as one of the UK’s pioneering craft beer venues, and later co-founded North Brewing Co. Under his leadership, North Brewing grew from an independent Leeds brewery into an internationally recognised brand, supplying major UK supermarkets and exporting beer to markets worldwide.

John’s experience spans beer selection, bar operations, brewing, brand development, retail, hospitality and international distribution. He was named Brewers Journal Global Ambassador in 2023 and also serves as a Leeds BID Board Member. He is the founder of Hexagon Strategy, a consultancy for hospitality and brewing businesses.

As a London Beer Competition judge, John brings extensive commercial knowledge, a deep understanding of beer quality and an experienced operator’s perspective on what makes a beer relevant, distinctive and successful in today’s market.
