A Peek into how Alfa Brouwerij’s Tradition and Sustainability Stands Out in the Beer Industry

Discover how Alfa Brouwerij’s premium beers and commitment to excellence has earned them international recognition

Alfa Brouwerij has been a proud participant in the London Beer Competition since 2021, showcasing two of their traditional beer styles: Alfa Edel Pils, a pilsner-style beer, and Alfa Krachtig Dort, a Dortmunder blond-style. With a legacy spanning over 150 years, the brewery continues to shine in international beer competitions, embodying the perfect blend of heritage and modern brewing techniques.

A Family-Owned Brewery Rooted in Tradition

Founded in 1870 by Joseph Meens in the southern Netherlands, Alfa Brouwerij remains a family-owned business, currently in its fifth generation. The brewery is deeply committed to producing premium lagers using only natural ingredients, including spring water sourced from its own land, a feat recognized by the Dutch government. This commitment to quality has led to numerous awards in global beer competitions, solidifying Alfa Brouwerij’s reputation for excellence.

The Journey of Alfa Brouwerij

What began as a small brewery attached to a farm has grown into a renowned name in the beer industry. Throughout the years, Alfa Brouwerij has remained true to its roots, adhering to the Reinheitsgebot (German Beer Purity Law) and using traditional brewing methods, such as the decoction method and extended lagering periods. These techniques ensure natural beer clarification and stability, resulting in perfectly balanced beers. While Alfa Brouwerij honours its past, it also embraces sustainability to secure a long-lasting legacy for future generations.

Inspired by Nature and Craftsmanship

The inspiration behind Alfa Brouwerij stems from founder Joseph Meens' agricultural background. After observing the thriving health of his cows, which drank from the natural spring on his land, Joseph realised the water’s purity made it perfect for brewing beer. This discovery led him to start Alfa Brouwerij in 1870, with the spring water becoming a central element of the brewery’s identity. Today, the use of 100% natural spring water continues to set Alfa Bier apart in both local and international markets.

Innovative Techniques for Excellence

Alfa Brouwerij is dedicated to maintaining the highest quality in its beers while also focusing on sustainability. In 1968, Leo Meens, the third generation, developed a biological water purification system, which is still in use today. Alongside this, the brewery has initiated local hop cultivation projects to enhance its beer’s flavour profile. The brewery's organoleptic tasting panel, established in honour of "Tante Wies" from the third generation, ensures that every batch meets the exceptional quality standards Alfa Brouwerij is known for.

A Unique Beer in a Crowded Market

Alfa Bier stands out in the market due to its unique combination of tradition and innovation. One of the few breweries using natural spring water from its own source, Alfa Bier boasts a distinct taste. The commitment to the Reinheitsgebot and rigorous quality checks conducted by the tasting panel ensures that every bottle reflects the brewery’s legacy of excellence. This dedication to quality has earned Alfa Brouwerij numerous gold medals in international beer competitions year after year.

Exciting Projects and Future Goals

Alfa Brouwerij is currently working on a project to cultivate Tettnanger hops on its own land, further refining its beer’s flavour profile. This traditional hop variety, originally from Germany’s Bodensee region, will be used in a special edition of Alfa Bier, highlighting the brewery’s commitment to local sourcing and innovation. Looking ahead, Alfa Brouwerij is focused on sustainable growth, in light of government limitations on water extraction. By prioritising long-term partnerships and sustainability, the brewery aims to preserve its authentic brewing process while continuing to innovate for future generations.
