The first mention of brewing in Merklín dates back to 1498, when Vilém from Chřínov founded a brewery along with a large pond and a mill. Further development took place in the 17th century, when in 1670 Jakub Filip Berchtold from Uherčice had the nearby old Merklin fortress demolished and in its place built a new baroque castle with a large farmyard, which included granaries, a brewery and stone brewing cellars.
