Sonnet 43 Brew House, a craft brewery whose name was inspired from the Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, is a brewery that believes in making brews from interpretations of beer styles they themselves like drinking. Based in the village of Coxhoe, County Durham, the same place Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born and raised, the brewery has a range of beers that are inevitably tasty.

At the 2018 London Beer Competition, beers from Sonnet 43 Brew House were among the award winners. Two of their beers were awarded bronze medals after the judges scored them on three criterias of quality, value and packaging. The two beers from Sonnet 43 that won bronze were

The Raven: A beer from the core range of Sonnet 43 Brew House, The Raven is a Bourbon Milk Stout. The name of the beer comes from one of Edgar Allan Poe’s famous works with the same name. The tasting notes contain oats and a multitude of malts at the base. While drinking, one should expect bitter yet silky chocolateness from the chocolate malts and cocoa nibs which give way to the smoky sweetness obtained from the ageing in bourbon liquor oak casks. The most brilliant feature of this beer is that its color matches that of the birds feathers.

Impressment: Impressment is an American Pale Ale that derives its name from the subject of Barrett Browning’s first known poem. This beer was created with an independent thought. It contains six big, bold American-leaf hops which gives the beer an intense flavour of tropical and citrus fruits. The hops are added periodically during the brewing process in order to get the most out of each hop. The vibrant fruitiness and complexity of the beer is held up nicely by the bittering and high alcohol volume. The beer has a slight pepperiness and a dry finish.
