In 1886, José Schumann y Cordés, son of a German brewer, requested authorization for the installation of a brewery to produce beer and soft drinks next to the estuary.
The brewery was initially located in two of the existing huts in the Campa of La Salve. One of them would house the brewing oven, the bottle cleaning area and an area to produce carbonated beverages, among others. The other hut was destined for the cellar and the storage of empty bottles.
From 1910 to 1978, LA SALVE was in the hands of the Pérez-Yarza family, who ran numerous food and hotel businesses in Bilbao, including the Boulevard and Arriaga cafés, the Bar Carabanchel and the Hotel Excelsior.
In 2014, Eduardo Saiz Lekue and Jon Ruiz Ibinarriaga together with the Pérez -Yarza family and local shareholders from Euskadi brought Bilbao beer back to the market.
